Marriage Prep Workshop

One aspect of our wedding that I knew early on in the planning stages that Jason and I had to do was attend some type of Marriage Prep seminar. I have always heard wonderful things about the marriage prep workshops at Second Baptist Church in Houston so I looked into it and signed us up!

I am so excited to go. We are attending a two-day seminar in April for couples who are getting married. Topics will include marital expectations, communication, differences and needs of a man/woman, predicting a successful marriage, love languages, preventing an affair, conflict resolution, becoming soul mates, the engagement covenant, wedding vows, finances (a big one for us), blending families, dealing with in-law issues, and more. Phew, that is a lot, but I can not think of a more productive way to spend our time a month before our wedding.

We also get to complete a Prepare-Enrich inventory separately before attending the seminar to see where each other stands on different issues. Even though Jason and I have been together for 2 years and have discussed everything under the sun, it is good to be counseled and prepared for such a big and important step in our lives.
I feel lucky that Jason and I have this Marriage Prep opportunity since we are not getting married in the Church-his grandfather is marrying us (he is a Baptist minister) so that is very special to us both, since we wanted to be married outside with nature. With me and my family being Catholic and Jason's family being Baptist and Methodist it is nice for us to be able to be counseled on our own...just the two of us!

I think the workshop will also be fun to meet other couples who live in our area who are preparing to be married too!
Did anyone else do/planning on doing some type of Marriage Prep course? What was your experience like?

  1. I wish we would have done something like that. We did a video series (boring!) because we were living in two separate places during our engagement (he was in Houston, I was in Huntsville). The video series covered the same stuff, but I would think that it would be easier to concentrate on it if we were actually with other people!
